《승정원일기》는 조선의 왕명 출납을 관장하던 승정원에서 국정의 낱낱을 일기 형태로 기록한 것이다. 무려 3,245책, 2억 4,300만 자에 달하는 분량의 기록으로, 단일 서종으로서는 세계에서 가장 방대한 양을 자랑한다. 그 분량 못지않게 내용도 풍부하여, 조선의 정치·경제·사회·문화 등에 걸쳐 다채로운 내용을 심도 있게 담고 있어 사료로서 활용도가 매우 높다. 한국고전번역원에서는 우리의 UNESCO 기록 유산인 《승정원일기》를 대중에게 널리 알리고자 2013년에 《후설》이라는 책으로 엮어 펴내었는데, 이 책은 그 내용을 영미 문화권의 독자들도 접할 수 있도록 영어로 옮긴 것이다.

The "Seungjeongwon Ilgi" was recorded in the form of a diary of the state affairs at Seungjeongwon, which was in charge of the receipt and receipt of King's name in Joseon. With a record of 3,245 books and 243 million words, it boasts the largest amount in the world as a single bibliographer. As it is rich in content, it is very useful as historical records as it contains various contents in depth across the politics, economy, society, and culture of Joseon. The Korea Institute of Antiquities and Translation compiled the "Seungjeongwon Ilgi" into a book called "Huseol" in 2013 to publicize our UNESCO record heritage to the public, which was translated into English so that readers of Anglo-American cultures could access it.
