킹 세종 더 그레이트 (역사판타지 장편소설) King Sejong the Great (Historical fantasy novel)

1996년 세종대왕 탄신 600주년을 맞아 일본인 천문학자 와타나베씨가 발견한 'QV1'이라는 소행성에 'SEJONG'이라는 이름을 붙여 세계 천문학계에 공포했다는 사실을 최근에야 알게 되었다. 이 소행성이 '세종'이라는 이름을 갖게 된 것은 세종대왕에 대해 누구보다 조예가 깊은 도쿄천문대 기치로 후루카와 교수의 강력한 추천이었다고 한다. 자연과학사에 남긴 세종대왕의 업적을 세계 천문학계에서도 인정한다는 뜻이다. 조메노스키 작가의 『킹세종』을 읽으며 소행성 ‘세종’이 묘하게 겹쳤다. SF TV드라마 대본과 시나리오를 집필한 작가답게 특유의 상상력이 재미있는 농담과 함께 생생한 구어체 표현으로 영화의 장면이 펼쳐지듯 스토리를 더욱 공고히 한다. 영어가 모국어인 작가가 영어로 쓴 최초의 한국역사판타지 소설이 이제 전세계인에게 소개되고 드라마까지 만들어져 세종대왕과 한글이 알려진다는 사실이 가슴을 뛰게 했다. 우리에게는 한글창제 과정이 너무도 익숙하지만 외국인인 작가에게는 정말 신기하고 대단한 일인 것이다. 작가가 마치 소행성 ‘세종’을 안드로메다에서 지구로 소환해 전세계인에게 알리는 느낌이다. 지금보다 더 많이 한글이 알려져 세계인이 한글을 즐겨 쓰게 되길 소망한다.

As a writer who wrote scripts and scenarios for sci-fi TV dramas, his unique imagination enhances the story as if scenes from a movie unfold with vivid colloquial expressions along with funny jokes. The fact that the first Korean historical fantasy novel written in English by an English-speaking writer in English has now been introduced to people all over the world and even made into a drama made King Sejong the Great and Hangul known, made my heart beat. We are all too familiar with the process of creating Hangeul, but for a foreign writer, it is a truly amazing and wonderful thing. It is as if the artist summoned the asteroid ‘Sejong’ from Andromeda to Earth and informed the world. I hope that Hangeul will be known more than now and people around the world will enjoy using Hangeul.
