우리가 지금 다시, ‘시’를 읽는 이유

‘시’의 시나리오는 2004년 밀양에서 실제로 일어난 10대 남자아이들의 여중생 집단 성폭행 사건에서 출발했다. 이창동 감독은 ‘작가의 말’에 이렇게 밝히고 있다. “나는 그 사건이 우리 사회의 일상적 도덕성에 대해 질문하고 있다고 생각했고, 나 자신에게는 문학과 영화 같은 예술의(영화가 예술일 수 있다면) 역할에 대한 질문으로 받아들였다. 그것은 내가 작가로서 글을 쓰고 영화를 만들면서 끊임없이 나 자신에게 물었던 본질적인 질문이라 할 수 있다. 예술은 현실의 고통과 어떤 관계에 있는가. 예술은 현실을 바꾸게 할 수 있는가.”

그러나 영화는 명확한 결말을 보여주지 않은 채 주인공 미자가 쓴 아름다운 시 한 편(‘아녜스의 노래’)으로 끝을 맺는다. 일상의 도덕성과 고통스럽고 부조리한 세계 사이에서 아름다움을 찾는다는 것은 무엇인가, 그리고 그것은 과연 성취 가능한 아름다움인가라는 근원적 질문에 대한 답은 관객 몫으로 남겨졌다. “여백이 많은 영화”(175쪽)라는 작가 노트 속 메모 한 줄이 영화에 그대로 반영된 것이다. 이처럼 작품 곳곳에 남겨진 행간과 여백은 오랜 시간이 흘렀음에도 이 영화를 오로지 현재에 있도록 한다.

문학평론가 신형철은 이 책에 담긴 에세이에서 “이 영화는 ‘시란 무엇인가’를 묻는 척하면서 ‘우리는 누구이며 지금은 어떤 시대인가’를 묻는다. 이 물음의 가치는 지난 십 년 동안 조금도 약화되지 않았다.”라고 썼다. 영화의 주인공 미자가 아름다운 것들 속에서 아름다움을 찾은 것이 아니듯, 관객과 독자들 또한 자기만의 아름다움을 길어 올릴 때 이 영화의 감동과 여운은 더욱 깊어질 것이다. 그러한 계기가 마련됐다는 것만으로도, 지금 ‘시’를 다시 만나야 할 이유는 충분하다.

‘시’ 줄거리

60대 중반의 나이지만 소녀 같은 감수성을 지닌 미자(윤정희). 낡은 서민 아파트에서 이혼한 딸의 중학생 아들 종욱(이다윗)을 돌보며 살고 있는 그녀는 동네 문화원에서 우연히 ‘시 창작’ 강좌를 수강하면서 난생처음 시 쓰는 일에 매진한다. 미자는 시상을 찾기 위해 그동안 무심히 지나쳤던 일상을 유심히 관찰하며 아름다움을 찾으려 하지만 녹록지 않다. 어느 날 종욱 친구의 학부형(안내상)이 찾아오고, 얼마 전 자살한 같은 학교 여학생을 집단 성폭행한 일에 종욱이 가담했다는 사실을 알게 된다. 그러나 종욱은 별다른 죄책감을 느끼지 않는 듯 보이고, 가해 학생들의 부모 역시 합의금을 건네는 것으로 사건을 무마하려 한다. 알츠하이머병 초기라는 진단을 받은 미자는 피해 여학생의 추모 미사에 참석하고, 그녀의 마지막 행적을 더듬어 따라가 보기도 한다. 그리고 자신이 간병하고 있는 강노인(김희라)으로부터 돈을 구해 종욱의 합의금을 마련하지만, 합의금만 전달하면 모든 일이 끝난다고 안심하는 학부형들과 달리 미자의 마음은 불편하기만 하다. 그날 밤 형사들이 찾아오고, 미자는 마침내 시 한 편을 완성한다.

This is even more significant because it is the first of the original films written and directed by the director. The film "The Blessing of Korean Films", "The Price of Realism", and the film "Shi" (2010), directed by G.I. Shenzhen, was born again after 10 years of release as a short story containing the original scenario. The film, which returned to the screen after 16 years at the time of the premiere, was honoured with the award of the 63rd Canadian International Film Festival as "the quietest but the most complete film of this creation" and "excellent work of conceptual completeness and completion". At the same time, he won numerous awards for best work, director, screenwriter, and actress at leading domestic and foreign film festivals, and was named the best Korean film of the 2010s.

This is even more significant because it is the first of the original films written and directed by the director. The book contains writings written by the writer himself, including "Original Scenarios", which enable you to reassert the backgrounds of a world-renowned film director and scenarist, as well as colorful and rich sights and readings.

First of all, the poets and literary critics' beautiful, yet intricate texts of the novel, the five-hour in-depth interviews between the film critics and the director of the film, and the local interviews of the prominent French poet Claude Musharr and Cannes, help us to fully understand not only the source of the literary problem consciousness of the movie, but also the current meaning that it still has. A reader who has already watched the movie will be able to regain the subtle and intricate emotions that the film has left behind, and even if he hasn't seen the movie yet, he can see it more deeply in another dimension.

That's why we're reading "Shi" again.

The story begins with a group rape of ten-year-old boys in Milwaukee in 2004. This is what the director of the "Writer's Word" explains. "I thought the incident was questioning the everyday morality of our society, and I accepted it to myself as a question about the role of art, such as literature and cinema (if film could be art). It's an essential question that I've been asking myself all the time as a writer and as a filmmaker. How art relates to the pain of reality. Can art change reality?”

The film, however, ends with a beautiful poem written by the protagonist ("The Song of Aegean") without a clear ending. The answer to the fundamental question of what is to find beauty between the morals of everyday life and the painful and miserable world, and whether it is achievable beauty, was left to the audience. A line in the author's note, "Hundreds of films" (p. 175), is reflected in the film. In this way, the tracks and passages left everywhere in the work keep the film only in the present, even though it has passed a long time.

In the essay contained in the book, the literary critic, Shen Ji-hoo, says, "The film pretends to ask, 'What is Shiran?' and asks, 'Who are we and what age we are now?' The value of this question has not weakened in the last decade.”I wrote it. Just as the heroine of the film has not found beauty in the beautiful things, the thrill and beauty of this film will be deepened when the audience and the readers also raise their own beauty. "Shi" plot

She's in her mid-sixties, but she has a girl-like sensitivity. She lives in an old resident apartment, taking care of her divorced daughter's high school son, Yavet, and accidentally takes a "Shi Creation" course at the neighborhood cultural park, where she finds herself working as an orphan for her first time. She looks carefully at the everyday life she has been through to find her prize, and she tries to find beauty, but she doesn't forget it. One day, a friend's brother-in-law arrives, and he finds out that he was involved in a group sexual assault on a schoolgirl who just killed herself. But he doesn't seem to feel guilty at all, and the parents of the students, too, try to settle the case by paying a contract. She was diagnosed with early Alzheimer's and attended a mass to commemorate the victim and followed her last acts. And unlike the college brothers who reassure him that the deal is over, he is uncomfortable. The detectives arrived that night, and Misha finally completed a piece of poetry.
