About the Authors

"As we savor the sometimes extraordinarily rich taste of the first cup of well-made tea, we have begun a process involving diminution and loss. The level of tea drops with each sip until the cup is empty; the second and third cups offer a decreasingly intense taste. By the end the leaves

have yielded their treasure and lie in the pot exhausted, the ceremony closes. There is an ending. The door must open, the return to activity outside is an obligation.

It is only when the entire process is lived as a unity of experience, valuable and meaningful in itself, that it can become a spiritual way. The aesthete wants to stay at the beginning, with the pleasure. The health-fiend is only thinking of the future benefits, not the event itself. The Way of Tea invites us to a recognition of the fragility, the transient nature of all experience, the value of very simple things, the wonderful treasures made available to us in a tea-leaf thanks to human skills. But above all it offers a moment in which to savor that precise moment, instead of running all the time out of the past towards the future without any way of being."

À propos des auteurs
