1993년 계간 『문학과사회』겨울호에 시 「서울의 겨울」 외 4편을 발표하고 이듬해 『서울신문』신춘문예에 단편소설 「붉은 닻」이 당선되어 작품 활동을 시작한 한강이 『검은 사슴』(1998) 이후 4년 만에 펴낸 두번째 장편소설이다. 이 책에서 작가는 미술 조각 기법의 일종인 ‘라이프캐스팅(석고 등의 소재를 이용해 인체를 그대로 본뜨는 방식)’이라는 장치를 통해 실존의 고통과 상처를 치열하게 탐구한다. 풍부한 알레고리와 서정적이면서도 강렬한 문체로 삶의 모순을 예리하게 포착해온 작가는 데뷔 이후 대중과 평단의 강력한 지지를 받으며 한국소설문학상(1999), 오늘의 젊은 예술가상(2000), 이상문학상(2005), 동리문학상(2010), 만해문학상(2014), 황순원문학상(2015), 인터내셔널 부커상(2016), 말라파르테 문학상(2017), 김유정문학상(2018), 산클레멘테 문학상(2019), 대산문학상(2022), 메디치 외국문학상(2023), 에밀 기메 아시아문학상(2024), 노벨문학상(2024) 등을 수상한 바 있다.
『그대의 차가운 손』은 “실종된 한 조각가가 남긴 수기 형식의 고백을 통해 사회적 가면 밑에 감춰진 인간의 어두운 내면을 끌어낸다. 일종의 예술가 소설로 인간의 이중적 속성, 존재의 본질과 형식 문제를 치밀하게 파고드는 아름다운 소설이다”(『문학과사회』 2002년 봄호, p. 35). 소설은 미스터리한 조각가의 실종을 다루면서, 그가 남긴 섬뜩하고 비인간적인 조각 작품을 둘러싼 은밀한 역사를 되짚어봄으로써 인간 정신의 심연을 들여다본다.
“한 조각 불꽃 같은 진실이 튀었다 사라지는 순간, 그 무서운 찰나를 놓치지 않기 위해”(p. 20) 조각가 장운형을 응시하는 화자 H의 시선은 “그토록 쓸모없고 연약한, 부서지기 쉬운 찰나의 진실, 찰나의 아름다움만이 때로 우리가 가진 전부라는 것을. 심지어 치유의 힘이 되기도 하는 것”(「작가의 편지-한강」, 『문학과사회』 2002년 여름호, p. 718)이라 언급한 바 있는 작가 자신의 문학적 통찰과도 맞닿아 있다.

It is the second full-length novel published by Han Kang in four years since "Black Deer" (1998), who released four poems other than "Winter in Seoul" in the 1993 quarterly "Literature Society" issue and began his work the following year. "Your Cold Hand draws out the dark inside of man hidden under the social mask through a handwritten confession left by a missing sculptor. It is a kind of artist novel that delves into the dual attributes of man, the nature and form of existence" (Spring 2002 issue of "Literature and Society," p. 35). While dealing with the disappearance of a mysterious sculptor, the novel examines the abyss of the human spirit by looking back on the secret history surrounding his eerie and inhumane sculptures.
"In order not to miss the moment a fiery truth splashes out and disappears" (p. 20), narrator H's gaze at sculptor Jang Woon-hyung is also in line with the author's own literary insight, which he once mentioned as "that useless and fragile, fragile, momentary truth, and momentary beauty are all we sometimes have.
